Table 11.1. Carbon Math: Beach Seaweed

One challenge with harvesting seagrass, beach-cast seaweeds, or kelp for biochar is that it’s likely to have a relatively higher salt content. It may not be ideal for certain soils unless washed well before charring, and that means having a plentiful supply of fresh water. Depending on the types and quantities of the salts, some sea-chars could be incorporated into salt licks for livestock or perhaps tested for use in batteries. More research is warranted. Sea-char can also be used to build artificial dunes to help lessen damage when storms come and waters rise. It has demonstrated pozzolanic value—meaning it can possess, under certain conditions, properties of concrete—as an additive for seawalls. It could be briquetted for green charcoal.
